Since times immemorial humanity has built walls and obstacles to separate its habitat and culture from others

These borders were as likely to be directed to the inside as to the outside, and could have an aggressive or a defensive character. These frontiers have always been epicenters of conflicts and military disputes.

With the passing of the centuries, the concept of ‘border’ has changed and has become more relative. In the recent past, people considered only their direct frontiers and the limits of their surroundings.

Today, in the age of globalization and high technological development, frontiers might on the one hand be perfectly secure, but on the other hand, through the total communication, they have also become transparent.

Every border, even the most distant, has been pushed against our private sphere carrying within itself all of its cruelties, problems and tragedies.

But in contrast to the past, today people lack personal experience, individual access or knowledge. And this is the great difference between fiction and reality.

Modern development does not only impose distant limits on our private spheres, but it also carries along its problems. This endangers our security and conditions of life in the same way it would if the problem were our own.

History knows a great deal of great historical moments, as when frontiers were opened. Complete strangers embraced each other when in Paris the Bastille was taken over, then in Burgenland and, most recently, in Berlin. Those were moments of happiness.

The Société Imaginaire is willing to preserve these happy moments for the future. With the „Interrelation of Forms“ method the society works for the encounter and communication among people from all over the world, of all cultures, ages and professions. By this, we want to make them realize what they have in common rather than focusing on what separates them.

This publication constitutes the proof of our contribution. Modest as it might be and quixotic as it might sound: It has worked. The essential idea of the border has become clearer. Many people have witnessed it, some have contributed actively in its realization and many others believe in it.
